Memphis, Tennessee’s Preferred Adolescent Outpatient Program

The intensive outpatient program at our hospital in Memphis, TN, provides adolescents with structured clinical support without disrupting their ability to attend school and live at home.

Who Can Participate in Adolescent IOP?

All admissions decisions at Crestwyn Behavioral Health Hospital are made on a person-by-person basis. In general, IOP is designed for young people ages 13-17 who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have completed inpatient programming, and can benefit from step-down services to support a transition out of treatment
  • Need more structured support than traditional outpatient therapy can provide, but symptoms are not severe enough to require round-the-clock care

One of the benefits of healing at Crestwyn is that adolescents who complete our residential program can transfer seamlessly into IOP, thus ensuring continuity of care.

However, we also accept adolescents who have completed inpatient or residential care at other centers, as well as those who are entering treatment at the IOP level.

What Disorders Does Adolescent IOP Treat?

The following are among the most common issues impacting adolescents who participate in IOP at Crestwyn:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • Substance abuse
  • Self-harm
  • Family discord
  • Struggles with emotional regulation
  • Problems with judgment or impulse control

Please note that this is a partial list of issues that may be treated via our intensive outpatient program. To determine if IOP is the right placement, we assess the nature and severity of each patient’s symptoms, and identify the level of care that will best meet their specific needs.

What Happens in Adolescent IOP?

Adolescent IOP sessions at Crestwyn are conducted Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 5:30-8:30 p.m., for a total of nine treatment hours per week.

The main method of treatment in IOP is group therapy. Group sessions allow young people to share their thoughts, learn from the insights and experiences of others, and receive guidance and feedback from a trained professional. Crestwyn IOP offers two types of groups:

  • Psychoeducational groups: Informative sessions on relevant topics such as disease education, managing symptoms, preventing relapse, dealing with stress, and related matters
  • Process groups: Structured safe spaces in which to share feelings, express emotions, and give and receive support

IOP patients also have opportunities for one-on-one sessions with a therapist, so that they can address topics that they may be hesitant to discuss in a group setting.

What Are the Benefits of Adolescent IOP?

The following are among the many benefits that IOP offers adolescents and their families:

  • Evening treatment hours that allow adolescents to live at home and attend school while still receiving structured support
  • Personalized care based on the needs of each patient
  • Services provided by professionals who specialize in working with young people
  • Group therapy sessions for positive peer interactions
  • Treatment that promotes healthier coping skills, increased self-confidence, and greater self-control

I loved the staff! Most of the techs and nurses were wonderful. The doctors were great, too. I would choose it again if I had to go back.
